Moncks Corner is farther to the north, near Lake Moultrie and serves as county seat. Moncks Corner offers a small town charm and today has a population of over 6000 people and two medical facilities. Lake Moultrie, a 60,400 acre man-made lake, is known throughout the United States for its catfish and legendary striped bass fishing. In fact, a catfish caught in the Cooper River (which is connected to the Lake) formerly held the world record. Skiers, sailors and divers all enjoy Lake Moultrie. The Lake offers 35 boat landings and 14 camping areas. It has access to the Intercoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Cooper River.
